Christopher L. Leisner, CPA, CMC
Partner

Throughout his 30 year accounting and consulting career, both in industry and in public accounting (formerly the Midwest Partner in Charge of Specialty Consulting, at BDO Seidman, LLP) Chris has had the pleasure of working with inventors, R&D scientists and entrepreneurial business owners. With a focus on IP valuations, financial reporting and IP transaction support, Chris uses his accounting finance, expert testimony and information technology expertise to help clients address three fundamental IP Management questions: What IP do you possess? What is that IP worth to your Company? What is the value to other Companies?
To expand his IP consulting practice after leaving BDO, Chris founded Creative IP Solutions, LLC in 2001. Creative specializes in helping both domestic and international clients manage and monetize intellectual property. In transactional retentions, cross-discipline IP valuation approaches that combine guidance from court opinions, FASB pronouncements, USPAP guidelines and technology-transfer practices are used. Creative established an approach that worked equally well in the Boardroom for business decisions, as well as the Courtroom for jury awards, known as the Technology Applied to Problems Solved Analysis. This approach analyzes the specific innovative technologies associated with the associated patent claims, as well as the technical and business problems addressed by these technologies and the economic benefits these legally protected innovations create.
As part of his IP Consulting practice, Chris has been an active participant in the National Knowledge and Intellectual Property Taskforce. He has presented at Taskforce seminars and Executive Briefings on IP Value Recognition and IP Value Extraction techniques. Additionally, on behalf of the Taskforce, he has worked with representatives of the office of the Secretary of Commerce, the Securities and Exchange Commission and the U.S. Treasury on IP issues. He served as the Taskforce’s Finance Chair, has authored several white papers and is a contributor to the IP management book titled “Business Power-Creating New Wealth from IP Assets”. Chris also maintains his CPA skills and has authored CFO desk reference accounting manuals on Intangible Assets, published by Wiley & Sons in 2006 and 2008.
